Gennon

Gennon is presented as an opulent Tudor aristocrat of considerable rank and wealth. The most telling detail of how he surrounds himself is his retinue: nearly all of his attendants are boys, children drawn from neighboring villages, a household arrangement that reflects the appetites for which he was notorious.

Gennon carried a reputation as a pederast, a man whose servants were almost uniformly boys and youths taken from the surrounding villages. His defining trait, though, was his consuming fixation on Griffith. After a single encounter he came to idolize the young mercenary, and his craving for one more night bordered on obsession, coloring nearly every choice he made afterward.

When the fledgling Band of the Falcon became caught in a territorial dispute, Griffith spent a night with Gennon in exchange for a fortune large enough to fund and protect his men. Blind to the mercenary's calculation, Gennon grew infatuated. Years afterward his money had raised him to general governor of Doldrey and supreme commander of Tudor's northern front. Learning that Griffith's band was besieging the fortress, he ordered Boscogn to capture the White Falcon alive so he might have him once more.

Fearing Boscogn would kill his prize instead, Gennon took personal command of his forces, promising a double promotion and any reward to whoever brought Griffith to him. The battle went against him. His demoralized army scattered and he was thrown from his horse, left to face Griffith on foot. He spoke of everything he had done to reach this moment and asked whether Griffith resented him, only to hear that he had never been more than a stone lying along the path Griffith walked. Stung and humiliated, Gennon tried to hurl insults back, but Griffith drove a blade through his eye to keep him from spreading petty rumors, ending his life.
