Skull Knight

The Skull Knight is a suit of animated skeletal armor rather than a living man, its hollow gaze lit by burning red eyes. Those sensitive to such things note a faint elfin aura about him, and Puck once remarked that he almost feels like an elf. He rides a supernaturally swift horse and carries a thorned blade; his very presence unsettles onlookers, throwing even Guts off balance the first time it drew near.

Aloof and enigmatic, the knight speaks with the detachment of a being who has watched a millennium of history unfold and can read the flow of causality before it arrives. His worldview is unsparingly realistic, forever citing fate's momentum, yet he has repeatedly played the hero, rescuing Guts, his companions, and Luca more than once. Flora has wondered aloud whether his kindness is genuine or merely serves his own ends, a question he pointedly ignores.

What he prizes is the human will to resist destiny; he dubs Guts the struggler and urges him to fight causality's current. He is candid to a fault, warning that what Casca truly wants may not match Guts' own desires. His oldest tie is a rivalry with Nosferatu Zodd, who greets him warmly as an old friend while the knight stays coolly indifferent, and he has shared a close bond with the witch Flora across centuries.

The Skull Knight stands among the most powerful figures in the series, able to face apostles and even God Hand members. In their recent clashes he has taken no wound from Zodd and once bested him outright during the Eclipse, and lesser apostles like the Count and Rosine have shown open fear of him. His swordsmanship is his defining gift: a single stroke of his ordinary-looking thorned blade shreds the monstrous released forms of apostles, and he severed Zodd's arm relying on skill alone.

By swallowing his sword and coating it in ingested beherits, he forms the Sword of Beherits, whose strokes tear open rifts into the deepest strata of the astral world. He uses these fissures for near-instant travel and to sweep away swarms of astral creatures, as when he rescued Guts during the Qliphoth's collapse. It was such a stroke, aimed at Femto but redirected by the angel into the twice-reborn Ganishka, that ignited the Great Wave of the Astral World. He was himself a former bearer of the Berserker Armor, whose helm once took a skull shape, and later sought the dwarf smith Hanarr to mend his gear.
