Thomas is a common-born boy from the village where Jill grows up, caught in the horror unleashed by Rosine's elf swarm. Guts saves him from the winged creatures, then, grimly, suspends him from the Dragon Slayer as living bait to lead the horde into a lethal trap.
Thomas is a boy of common birth, one of the children living in the same village that Jill calls home.
The manga treats Thomas less as a personality than as an endangered child. He registers simply as an everyday village youngster caught in a nightmare far larger than himself, with the story fixing on his danger rather than on any traits of his own.

Naruto vs Luffy with the twist nobody asked for: Luffy tickled Hinata on date night, and she kind of liked it. We break down the whole fight and commit to a winner....

There are no women on Namek. That isn't an oversight, it's the biology. Why we handed Piccolo the one thing his own species rules out, and why it had to be trap soul....
After Rosine's winged elves devour his mother and father and move to snatch the boy himself, Guts intervenes to pull him free. Hoisting Thomas by the tunic on the point of the Dragon Slayer, the swordsman dangles him as live bait to draw the swarm into a barn. He then whirls the massive blade overhead to shatter the loft's supports, collapsing the ceiling and bringing the piled hay down; a flung flask of gunpowder and a blast from his cannon arm follow, and the resulting explosion burns the swarm to nothing while sparing both him and the boy. Thomas tries afterward to slip back among the villagers alongside Jill, only to be torn away from her once Guts seizes Jill as a hostage and bolts from the settlement.
