Harutoki Ide

Harutoki keeps company with Yasutora Sado and their mutual friend Gitano, drifting through Karakura Town in their easygoing little group. He is quick to hand his troubles to someone else: on learning that the cockatiel he has taken in is cursed and blamed for the grim fates of its former keepers, his first instinct is to foist the bird onto his friends rather than keep it himself.

During Bleach's opening arc, Harutoki brings the cursed cockatiel to Gitano and Sado. Gitano wants nothing to do with it, having already heard the stories, and warns Sado in turn. A steel girder then slips loose from a construction site overhead, and Sado shields the group by taking the falling beam across his shoulders. The bird speaks up to thank him, startling both Harutoki and Gitano with its evident intelligence.

Some weeks later the three head out for lunch together, unaware that a Hollow named Bulbous G has come hunting Sado. Realizing he alone is the quarry, Sado bolts to lead the creature away while Harutoki and Gitano call after him, blind to the danger. During the Arrancar arc he is seen once more simply passing time around town with the same companions.

Harutoki is an ordinary human with no spiritual power. He cannot see Hollows, which is why the threat of Bulbous G passed him by entirely and why Sado had to draw the monster off on his own.
