Izaemon Todo

Todo tied his black hair up in a high tail and wrapped a protective metal band across his brow. His usual bearing was grave and businesslike, and like the rest of the 9th Division he wore the standard black uniform beneath a high-collared white jacket.

A dutiful soldier through and through, Todo carried out commands the moment they were given, never pausing to question his captain. That obedience showed when he moved at once to alert the research institute about the vanishing task force.

During the events long before the present day, Todo rode out with Kensei and other ranking members of the 9th Division to look into residents disappearing from the Rukongai. In the field they saved a young Shuhei Hisagi and his companions from a Hollow. Once Kensei grasped that Shinigami were vanishing as well, he sent Todo to fetch a 12th Division researcher, and Todo reached the lab and had Kisuke Urahara assign Hiyori Sarugaki to help.

Returning to camp that night alongside Kaname Tosen, Todo offered to relieve him on watch, but Tosen insisted all of them stay alert. In the dark, the guards were ambushed. Kensei and Heizo Kasaki rushed out to find Todo standing over two fallen comrades, and his strange manner briefly cast suspicion on him, until it became clear that he too had been killed. As a seated officer he was a capable swordsman, strong enough to cut deep into a huge Hollow, and he used flash-step to move at speed.
