History
Kai was produced in Soul Society as a Duplicator Modified Soul during Project Spearhead, gifted with the power to copy both the forms and the abilities of others. When the project was scrapped and most Mod-Souls were disposed of, he endured as a preserved sample held by the Shinigami Research and Development Institute. In Dark Souls he takes on Rin Tsubokura's shape and moves to gather up the other Mod-Souls, only for them to warp into Hollows; Ichigo Kurosaki rescues him and carries him to the World of the Living, though Kon reports that he had already faded away. His name carries a small nod to Kon, being the very one Kon had once wanted for himself, both drawn from the term for an artificial soul.
