Ichigo Kurosaki

Ichigo is instantly recognized by the bright orange spikes of his hair, a color that drew mockery all through his youth. He is tall and lean with a light complexion and brown eyes, favors close-fitting clothes, and often turns up in shirts marked with the number fifteen, a nod to the reading of his name. Soul-reaper life left him visibly more muscled. In spiritual form he wears the black robes of a Shinigami with a strap across his chest, and observers such as Jūshirō Ukitake have remarked how strongly he resembles the late Kaien Shiba. His hair lengthened after his time in the Dangai, and following his training at the Soul King Palace he gained white shoulder plates crossed over his chest to hold his twin blades, along with a marked cloak knotted at the waist.

From childhood Ichigo was shaped by the loss of his mother and by his father's belief that his name stands for protecting a single thing, a notion that hardened into a lifelong resolve to keep others safe. As a teenager he is headstrong, quick-tempered, and impulsive, hiding a compassionate streak behind a permanent scowl and a studied air of detachment. He is a diligent student despite his rough reputation, holds no patience for fortune tellers or anyone who profits from the unseen, and grows flustered around immodestly dressed women. He speaks bluntly even to his elders, addressing captains without ceremony. In battle he keeps a personal code, fighting to win by what he judges honest means, often refusing the aid of his inner Hollow, taunting his opponents, and sinking into self-reproach whenever he fails someone he meant to protect. Cruelty toward comrades, even among his enemies, disgusts him.

Ichigo's single most remarkable trait is how fast he grows, absorbing in days techniques that take other soul reapers years, famously reaching Bankai within a matter of days. His spiritual pressure is immense and golden in hue, pressing on those nearby at captain level even when he is far from full strength. Trained in martial arts since early childhood, he fights with great power, speed, and endurance, and he is a gifted swordsman whose flash-step sharpened quickly under Yoruichi Shihōin.

His blade is Zangetsu, which narrows into the slim black Bankai, Tensa Zangetsu, and channels his signature crescent energy wave, the Getsuga Tenshō. His makeup is unusual even by Soul Society's measure: alongside his Shinigami power he carries the instincts of a Hollow, whose mask he can call up, the abilities of a Fullbringer, and a Quincy inheritance passed down from his mother. Weaving these strands together, the Wandenreich marked him as one of Soul Society's five Special War Powers and judged him among the most dangerous foes they faced.
