Warm and easygoing, Mai was for a time the sole friend Kyōko Haida had. That bond frayed once Kyōko challenged her over the boy she was seeing, leaving Mai frightened of her and pushing her away.

History
The two attended the same school, but Mai grew uneasy after Kyōko correctly guessed a teacher's test question. When Kyōko discovered that Mai's boyfriend was a stingy womanizer and tried to warn her, Mai branded her a freak and fled in tears. Later, during the anime-only Beast Swords arc, a Tōjū-possessed Kyōko hunts Mai down yet fights the spirit's control enough to keep from killing her. Mai faints at the sight of the Zanpakutō spirit's traces, and once Ichigo Kurosaki, Orihime Inoue, and Rukia Kuchiki show up to confront the Tōjū, Rukia pulls her well clear of the fight and then erases her memory of the ordeal. The next day Mai strolls through town with classmates, never noticing Kyōko watching from a distance.
