Ōko Yushima

Yushima shares his green hair and brown eyes with both Nozomi and Kageroza Inaba, though his jaw is narrower and his cheekbones softer, and he lacks their streak of yellow hair. He wore standard black robes during his time in the Tenth Division, but after his transfer he adopted a long yellow garment that buttons up the front and rises stiffly around the back of his head, mirroring Inaba's attire.

Outwardly timid, Yushima nonetheless placed no value on companionship, convinced that leaning on others only invited interference. The contradiction ran deep, for he craved recognition even while caring for no one. He poured fierce pride into his research, and when Central 46 dissolved Project Spearhead he flew into a rage, screaming for an explanation.

Yushima struggled through the Shin'o Academy, weak in combat and certain his peers looked down on him. Assigned first to the Tenth Division, he was moved decades later to the Twelfth and its Research Institute, where his intelligence and diligence outweighed his lack of fighting skill. There he led Project Spearhead and developed the Modified Souls, among them Kageroza Inaba and Nozomi Kujo. When Central 46 shut the project down, he refused to let his life's work die: he cast his research data into the Dangai and poured a portion of his memories into Inaba just as officers arrived to arrest him, then collapsed into a near-lifeless trance.

Confined to the Nest of Maggots, the hollow shell of Yushima sat motionless in a cell, visited on occasion by Inaba, who spoke to him of his plans. Kisuke Urahara and Kon later found him there, with Urahara doubting he would ever wake. His sword, Sumitsukigasa, answers the command Seethe by becoming a double-bladed polearm, and by spinning it he can tear open portals into the Dangai.
