Ryūsei Kenzaki

Kenryū pairs the standard Shinigami dress with a lighter garment worn beneath it and grey gloves reaching to mid-forearm. His hair takes a dark blue-black shade, and a cold, icy blue lights his eyes.

Because his partner Enryū speaks so little, Kenryū acts as Rurichiyo's voice, recounting her history and standing in as her spokesman. Ordinarily gentle and mild, he takes offense at Ichigo's careless attitude toward the princess and scolds him for it, yet his devotion to Rurichiyo runs so deep that the mere thought of her hatred nearly breaks him. In a fight he prefers ruses and evasion over direct confrontation.

Kenryū comes to the Human World with Rurichiyo and Enryū to shield her from Gyōkaku Kumoi, a kinsman scheming to kill her for power, and enlists a reluctant Ichigo to help. When assassins wielding the Bakkōtō close in, he stalls Jinnai Dōko with his blade so Enryū can flee with the princess, and after Rurichiyo declares she hates him, a despairing Kenryū nearly takes his own life before Uryū intervenes. Their quarrel is eventually settled with a game of kemari.

The affair peaks when the Third Division's new captain, Shūsuke Amagai, seizes Rurichiyo and carries her off to confront Yamamoto; Kenryū's Zanpakutō buys an opening, and Ichigo defeats Amagai. That blade, Benishidare, answers the command Bloom Madly, sprouting five flowers whose pollen coaxes useless blossoms onto an enemy's weapon, while its Sange technique rains down needles of energy. A capable swordsman skilled at Shunpo, Kenryū excels above all at Kidō, raising barriers advanced enough to startle Rukia.
