Appearance

Tall and heavily built, Seizo wears his brownish-red hair in a long ponytail tied off with a red cord, framed by lengthy sideburns, with faint stubble over his lip and chin. His black uniform is adapted in small ways: he rolls the sleeves up to his shoulders, drapes white cloth over his back and arms and ties it in front, and binds his wrists in bandages. In his youth the hair ran a brighter dark red, the ponytail was shorter, and his face was clean of stubble.

Personality

Gentle and eager to help, Seizo takes on the Eleventh Division's most thankless work without complaint and is quick to lend aid, whether handing Ichigo ointment for a bruise or coaching him toward a win over Renji. Ichigo found him strikingly mild for that rowdy division. Years of labor have made him unmatched at chores, outpacing Ichigo at laundry and cleaning with ease. As a fighter he is fiercely principled, refusing to win by any ploy even when it cost him defeat after defeat against Ikkaku, and he never yields against hopeless odds, once shielding Ikkaku from a Hollow and taking the blow himself.

History

Seizo entered the Eleventh Division alongside Ikkaku and showed real promise with a blade, yet his refusal to fight dirty left him losing their spars again and again without ever giving up. On one night hunt he threw himself between Ikkaku and an attacking Hollow, and the strike drained away nearly all of his spiritual power. Reduced to menial duties, he was serving tea and folding laundry when Ichigo Kurosaki took an interest in him, pressing him on why he accepted such a diminished role and why Ikkaku no longer acknowledged him. Seizo revealed that his discharge from the Gotei 13 was only days off and that he meant to leave without a fuss. Ichigo refused to let it rest, challenging him to a contest of chores instead of swords; beaten easily yet undeterred, Ichigo's persistence stirred Seizo's own old resolve. When Hollows struck during a Rukongai relief effort, Seizo rose despite his weakness, drew his sword, and cut down two of them before Ikkaku arrived to help him finish the last. On the day he departed, Ichigo and Renji came to see him off, and the Eleventh Division lined up in a corridor of honor. Ikkaku's own bow brought a smile to his face, and he walked away content.
