The Man Who Risks His Life in the 11th Division!

Sparring with Renji Abarai under Ikkaku Madarame's eye, Ichigo Kurosaki is served tea by a mild-mannered division member the others call Seizo. When the squad reaches a town wrecked by Hollows that struck in a pack and scattered, Seizo tends the wounded civilians rather than fight. Curious about the man, Ichigo learns from Yumichika Ayasegawa that his full name is Seizo Harugasaki and that he was once a promising Shinigami who often sparred with Ikkaku.

Yumichika reveals the turning point: on a mission with Ikkaku, a Hollow trapped Ikkaku's blade and began draining his spirit energy, but Seizo shoved him clear and took the drain himself, losing his own power. Now scheduled for discharge from the Gotei 13 in three days, Seizo refuses Ichigo's push to duel Ikkaku again. When the Hollow pack returns, Seizo is left to guard the injured, only for the Hollows to surround them. Refusing to give up despite having no hope against five foes, he takes up his sword and cuts down two before being gravely wounded.

Thanking Ichigo for helping him rediscover his honor, Seizo resolves to die fighting, but Ikkaku appears at his side and declares the real Seizo has returned. The two split up and dispatch the remaining Hollows with ease. Afterward, the division sees Seizo off outside the barracks, and Ikkaku waits by the gate to watch him pass through.

Seizo Harugasaki's backstory is revealed: he sacrificed his spirit energy to save Ikkaku from a draining Hollow. Facing discharge, he stands his ground against a Hollow pack guarding the wounded and cuts down two before Ikkaku joins him to finish the rest, restoring his pride as a Shinigami.

This anime-only episode adapts no manga chapters and falls outside any named arc, opening with Melody of the Wild Dance and ending with Song For.... A picture-book skit features Isane and Rangiku mocking the 11th Division's grubbiness while Yumichika seethes nearby. The episode first aired days after the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, so its original broadcast was shrunk to make room for on-screen disaster updates.
