Clash! Hisagi vs. Kazeshini

Within Ichigo's inner world, his Hollow self trades furious strikes with Muramasa, treating the fight as sport while the real Ichigo curses his helplessness on the ground nearby. At the medical barracks, Shunsui and Ukitake weigh a grim theory: if the manifested spirits now exist apart from their masters, killing one might strip a Shinigami of that blade forever, a possibility with no proof either way.

Renji, meanwhile, is battered by the bickering halves of Zabimaru, Saru and Hebi, who taunt him as weak and threaten to abandon him for a stronger wielder. Deeper in the forest, Shūhei Hisagi is stalked through the trees by Kazeshini, whose kusarigama strike from cover. Kazeshini declares he exists only to reap lives and cares nothing for the bond Hisagi believed they shared, wounding Hisagi and forcing him to accept he must kill his own spirit.

Muramasa restrains the Hollow with his sensory tendrils and dismisses him as lacking the power he seeks, but the real Ichigo breaks free and shields the Hollow, insisting the creature is a part of himself and declaring that he is Human, not merely a Shinigami. His will shoves Muramasa out of his inner world entirely. Reminded by the fight of his vow to surpass Byakuya, Renji recovers his resolve and successfully releases Zabimaru once more.

Ukitake voices the theory that destroying a manifested spirit could cost its owner the Zanpakutō permanently, raising the stakes for every duel in the arc. Kazeshini rejects any bond with Hisagi and declares himself a pure instrument of killing. Ichigo protects his inner Hollow, affirms his identity as a Human in command of his own power, and ejects Muramasa from his soul. Renji, rediscovering his goal of overtaking Byakuya, forces Zabimaru back into Shikai and turns the tide against Saru and Hebi.

This entry is part of the anime-exclusive Zanpakutō Unknown Tales arc and adapts no manga chapter. It braids together three simultaneous confrontations, using each to explore the theme of Shinigami and spirit as partners. A comedic Quincy Encyclopedia segment closes the episode, with Ryūken reminiscing over childhood photos of Uryū until Isshin needles him into firing arrows.
