The thirtieth episode guides Ichigo through the Seireitei's hidden canals toward Rukia's prison, filling in her quiet bond with a Fourth Division healer before Renji steps forward at the base of Senzaikyū to renew their rivalry.
Hanatarō leads Ichigo and Ganju through the waterways beneath the city, admitting that only the lowly Fourth Division knows the routes because cleaning the canals is among the menial chores assigned to them. When Ichigo asks why an enemy would help, Hanatarō confesses he has heard much about Ichigo from Rukia and simply wants her saved. At the First Division, meanwhile, a situation report stuns the gathered lieutenants with news that the Eleventh Division was nearly wiped out, and Renji quietly slips away through a window.
Resting in an alcove, Hanatarō recalls his time cleaning Rukia's cell, how her warmth surprised him and how nearly all her stories circled back to a single person in the Human World. He remembers her tearful belief that she had hurt Ichigo and twisted his fate by giving him her powers. Moved, Ichigo declares this is exactly why he has come, and the three climb out near the towering prison. There, the clearing mist reveals Renji waiting on the steps.
Ichigo and Renji clash fiercely, sparks flying as their blades meet, and to the astonishment of Ganju and Hanatarō, Ichigo drives the lieutenant back against a wall. When Renji reminds him how many captains and lieutenants still stand between him and Rukia, Ichigo vows to cut down anyone in his way. Renji then releases Zabimaru, slamming Ichigo into a building, and reveals that officers have their power suppressed in the Human World, making him five times stronger now than at their first meeting. Battered and bleeding, Ichigo simply climbs out and claims the blow did nothing, boasting he could handle eleven more of Renji's caliber, as Rukia's eyes snap open above.
Hanatarō guides Ichigo and Ganju through the canal network toward Senzaikyū and shares Rukia's imprisonment and her guilt over changing Ichigo's fate. The lieutenants learn of the Eleventh Division's near destruction, and Renji leaves the meeting to intercept the intruders. Ichigo begins his rematch with Renji, overpowering him at first before Renji releases his shikai and reveals that his suppressed strength has returned fivefold in the Human World's absence.
The episode adapts chapters 94 and 95 within the Soul Society sneak-entry storyline. The anime adds several expanded scenes, including flashbacks to Ichigo and Rukia's first meetings, Kenpachi sensing the fight, and Uryū and Orihime observing the tightening security. Its next-episode preview features Ichigo and Renji comically escalating their claims of strength to absurd multiples.

The transformation everyone knows, the follow-up question nobody would touch. Why we made a smooth R&B track about the golden glow Dragon Ball never talks about....
