Urgent Report! Aizen's Terrifying Plan!

Ichigo wakes inside a floating dreamscape modeled on the Senzaikyū, where a hallucination of Kenpachi Zaraki presses him about why anyone needs a reason to fight, arguing that the hunger for power and the hunger for battle are one and the same. Spurred on, Ichigo yanks the black blade of Hollow Ichigo's Tensa Zangetsu from his own gut. In the waking world, Love barely evades the fully Hollowfied Ichigo as the watching Visored note his internal fight has nearly matched Hiyori's record of sixty-nine minutes.

Ichigo drives the sword through his Hollow, and the surging coat of Zangetsu spreads to stain his double's garb black. Conceding the match for now, Hollow Ichigo vows to seize the throne the instant Ichigo shows weakness before dissolving in flame. Ichigo emerges from the shattered husk wearing a smaller mask, collapses, and weakly reports that he feels fine. Across Karakura, Orihime senses his Reiatsu and, after fretting over Tatsuki's odd behavior, returns home to find Hitsugaya and Rangiku installing a grotesque, fleshy monitor in her apartment.

Yamamoto appears on the feed and announces that the investigation has uncovered Aizen's objective: the Ōken. A flashback shows Ukitake, aided by Shunsui and Nanao, discovering documents on how the key was created. Building one demands a hundred thousand souls and a Jūreichi two ri across, and the current Jūreichi is Karakura itself, meaning its formation would erase the town and its residents. Since the Hōgyoku needs roughly four months to fully wake, the clash will come in winter, and Yamamoto asks Orihime and her friends to help defend the target. Hinamori waits to speak with Hitsugaya, while Sado trains against Renji and Uryū dodges Ryūken.

Ichigo overcomes his inner Hollow and reclaims control, gaining a lasting but unstable partnership with it. Yamamoto broadcasts Aizen's true goal, the creation of the Ōken, to Hitsugaya, Rangiku, and Orihime. The requirements are revealed as a hundred thousand souls and a Jūreichi, identified as Karakura Town, whose sacrifice would obliterate the town entirely. Yamamoto forecasts a winter war and recruits Orihime and her human friends to help protect the area.

Set within the Arrancar storyline, this episode adapts parts of chapters 221 through 223. Its Arrancar Encyclopedia bonus has Gin liken the birth of an Arrancar to gambling, since no one can predict what emerges when a Hollow's mask comes off, with Aizen appearing to confirm he finds the uncertainty amusing. The anime reworks several beats, presenting Ukitake's discovery as a full flashback rather than Yamamoto's spoken account.
