Love and Rose reach the forest to find Kensei turned into a Hollow, his mask and reiatsu matching one exactly. Shinji warns them to draw their Zanpakutō or die, and Kensei promptly appears behind Love, shredding his uniform. When Hiyori tries to stop them from harming Muguruma, Shinji insists they must, precisely because it truly is Kensei. Lisa reasons that an enemy can be beaten without being killed and aims to sever his tendons, but as Rose closes in, a Hollowfied Mashiro drops from above and kicks him into the ground. Mashiro then turns on Shinji and is snared by Hachi's Kidō. Hachi binds Kensei with a Bakudō as well, yet Muguruma breaks free of it, leaving the lieutenant stunned.

Elsewhere, outside a Twelfth Division building, a cloaked figure moves through the dark. Tessai remarks that a cloak able to fully mask one's reiatsu is no ordinary feat, and Urahara lowers his hood. Tessai says he suspected this the moment he saw Urahara at the meeting, recalling their years together at Yoruichi's mansion, and asks if he means to rescue Hiyori. When Urahara asks to pass, Tessai refuses to let him go alone, warning that he senses an unfathomable terror and insisting they go together.

The reinforcements' fight reveals the terrifying scale of Hollowfication, as the transformed Kensei and Mashiro overpower captain-class opponents and shatter Hachi's binding spells. The chapter also confirms Urahara's resolve to defy Yamamoto's order and go after Hiyori himself, and it pairs him with Tessai, whose loyalty and dread set the two on the path toward the volume's climax.

The eighth Turn Back The Pendulum chapter was adapted as part of Episode 210, Hiyori dies? The Beginning of Tragedy. It cements the alliance between Urahara and Tessai that will define the aftermath of the Hollowfication incident.
