Drowsy, Bloody, Crazy

Komamura seizes on Kenpachi's boast about facing four foes and warns that he overestimates himself. Kenpachi only urges them to strike from every side for a chance at landing a hit. Yachiru dubs Aramaki "Mustache Guy" and hauls the Ryoka away, insisting they not spoil Kenpachi's fun. Tōsen judges that Kenpachi has lost both his sanity and his honor, to which Kenpachi cheerfully replies that he never had either to begin with.

Ikkaku and Yumichika reappear to stop Iba and Hisagi from claiming the fight, with Ikkaku mocking Iba as a coward who abandoned the Eleventh Division. The four subordinates vanish with Shunpo, leaving the captains to face Kenpachi alone. Komamura ruptures the ground and unleashes his Shikai, Tenken, whose colossal armored arm and sword smash Kenpachi and split the bridge apart. Tōsen follows with Suzumushi Nishiki: Benihikō, raining hundreds of thin blades across the ruins. Yet the dust settles to reveal Kenpachi still upright, blades lodged in his flesh, tearing one loose as he swears to cut both captains in two.

The chapter closes the sixteenth volume, Night of Wijnruit, and was adapted as part of episode 51, Morning of the Sentence. In its final panels, Renji Abarai races toward Senzaikyū to reach Rukia while his captain, Byakuya, silently watches from above, setting up their confrontation in the next volume.
