Yachiru Kusajishi

Yachiru has the look of a tiny girl barely past toddling age, her cheeks always faintly flushed beneath dark-pink eyes that match her pink hair. She dresses in standard Shinigami black with a lieutenant's armband. In the period after Aizen's fall her hair sits flatter and she adds a crossbones clip on the left side.

Bubbly, restless, and mostly carefree, Yachiru spends most of her waking hours perched on a spot just over Zaraki's left shoulder and turns prickly if anyone disturbs it. She bristles at criticism and tends to swing at whoever offers it, yet her favorite pastime is coining nicknames for everyone she meets, from Ken-chan for her captain to Baldy for Ikkaku. She shares Zaraki's hopeless sense of direction but still ends up steering him around.

A bottomless sweet tooth draws her to the tea ceremonies, flower-arranging, and calligraphy gatherings of other captains, where she devours the snacks and promptly vanishes. A gifted sneak, she puts her infiltration skills mainly toward pranks, and as the group's president she blew the Shinigami Women's Association treasury on toys and candy.

Zaraki found her as a nameless infant in Kusajishi, North Rukongai's brutal 79th district and one of the cruelest corners of the afterlife. Unshaken by the corpses around him, the baby crawled over and grasped his bloodied blade with a laugh, and he took her in rather than leave her to die. He named her Yachiru after the one person he ever looked up to and gave her the surname of the district she came from; from then on she rode on his back.

Through the Ryoka invasion, the Hueco Mundo campaign, and the fake Karakura battle she stayed at her captain's side, cheering his fights and hauling him to safety when he fell. During the Thousand-Year Blood War she fought the elusive Sternritter Guenael Lee, finally landing hits by trusting the instinctive reflex that tells her to strike, before Gremmy Thoumeaux seized and nearly destroyed her until Zaraki arrived. Her Zanpakuto, Sanpo Kenju, manifests two beasts, the small Lumpy and the larger Boney, that copy her strikes a step before and after her own, leaving an attack almost impossible to dodge. After Zaraki's final clash she simply vanished, leaving her uniform and lieutenant's badge behind.
