With their own battles finished, Kenpachi and Yumichika trade quiet words on the broken bridge. Meanwhile, Yamamoto looses the oldest of all Zanpakuto against Shunsui and Ukitake, who answer with the only two twin-bladed releases in the Soul Society.
Kenpachi rests on the shattered bridge with his sword stuck in the ground when a cheerful Yumichika approaches and asks whether the fighting is over. Kenpachi explains that Komamura sensed Yamamoto in combat and rushed off to aid him. Noticing Yumichika is completely unhurt, Kenpachi learns he won his own bout cleanly and only changed his uniform because it got dirty. When told he seems in high spirits, Yumichika reads it as a compliment on his looks and wriggles with delight before admitting he is simply thrilled to have finally fought all out.
On a nearby rooftop, a drained Hisagi complains that Yumichika's blade drank up all his energy. He then sees an immense blaze in the Third Old City and knows the reiatsu belongs to Yamamoto, who faces Shunsui and Ukitake with Ryujin Jakka unleashed, flame coiling around him. Ukitake privately marvels at the transcendent pressure and heat of the eldest and mightiest of all Zanpakuto, a blade that reduces everything before it to ash.
Yamamoto asks why they hesitate and urges them to release their swords rather than burn without a struggle. Ukitake complies with Sogyo no Kotowari, splitting his weapon into twin blades joined by a charm-strung cord, and Shunsui crosses his pair to release the silver-edged scimitars of Katen Kyokotsu. Observing that these are the only two dual-bladed Shikai in all of Soul Society, Yamamoto calls the sight magnificent, and the three captains collide amid a burst of fire.
Yumichika reveals he won his fight against Hisagi unscathed. Yamamoto releases Ryujin Jakka, and Shunsui and Ukitake answer with Katen Kyokotsu and Sogyo no Kotowari, the Soul Society's only twin-bladed releases, before the three-way battle erupts.
