Speaking through Ichigo Kurosaki's stolen body, the masked Hollow within claims no name and opens a diagonal gash across Byakuya Kuchiki's chest with Tensa Zangetsu. Cackling, it mocks Ichigo for buckling under the weight of his own pressure, crushes the Senkei blade in its grip, and boasts that it will demonstrate the proper use of Bankai. It looses a Getsuga Tenshō gone jet black, startling the captain with the altered color, then flanks him and fires a second, appearing at his back so both blasts detonate against him at once. As Byakuya's hair ornaments shatter and he wonders aloud whether he faces a Hollow, Ichigo's own left hand claws at the half-formed mask, and after a silent struggle he tears it away and reclaims himself.

Ichigo apologizes for the interruption and offers to begin again, and Byakuya, noting that the youth spared him even while possessed, smiles and lets the matter of the strange presence drop. Agreeing that neither has much strength remaining and that one more exchange should decide everything, Byakuya presses Ichigo once more on why he never moved to save Rukia, pledging an answer should he lose. He then compresses Senbonzakura Kageyoshi into Shūkei: Hakuteiken, a great pair of winged blades joined by a halo with a single long sword in hand. Having been taught nothing but the Getsuga Tenshō, Ichigo pours every last drop of his power into one strike, and the two hurl themselves at each other in a burst of clashing white and black energy.

The chapter marks the first extended appearance of Ichigo's inner Hollow in battle and sets up the duel's decisive blow through Byakuya's ultimate technique. Belonging to the Soul Society arc and collected in the nineteenth volume, it was adapted into the fifty-ninth episode of the anime.
