Having taken Shinso through his own body to save Rukia, Byakuya lets the retracting blade slip free and slumps to the ground, leaving his sister to cradle him and beg for an answer. As Aizen reaches for his sword to finish the pair off, Yoruichi Shihoin and Sui-Feng flash to his flanks, one seizing his weapon and the other pressing steel to his throat with a promise to take his head at the slightest twitch.

The standoff shatters when Aizen's recruited Gatekeepers, Kaiwan, Danzomaru and Higonyudo, come crashing down among the buildings below the hill. Before they can free him, Jidanbo plows into the fray carrying Kukaku Shiba, who claims she turned up for the spectacle and levels Higonyudo with a bolt of Raikoho. Recognizing that his brainwashed friends leave him no choice, Jidanbo apologizes and drops Danzomaru with a single punch. Overhead, Rangiku Matsumoto slips behind Gin, locks his wrist and lays her blade against his neck, and Gin merely apologizes to Aizen for being caught. Yoruichi declares the fight lost as Yamamoto, Kyoraku, Ukitake, Hisagi and a host of other officers close in, Hisagi keeping his sword at Tosen's throat. With every route sealed and even Kaiwan beaten, Aizen greets the trap with an eerie calm.

This ninth chapter of the end of hypnosis arc belongs to the twentieth volume and gathers nearly the entire able-bodied leadership of the Gotei 13 in one place. Its cliffhanger, Aizen smiling while surrounded, feeds directly into the escape depicted in the following chapter. The events were adapted into the sixty-second anime episode.
