Confession in the Twilight

With the fighting over, the Fourth Division fans out across Sokyoku Hill to treat the wounded, and Yasochika Iemura even orders his healers to tend the intruders, admitting that they saved Soul Society. Retsu Unohana arrives aboard Minazuki, reports that Hitsugaya and Hinamori are stable, and kneels beside the gravely hurt Byakuya, who quietly asks to speak with Rukia.

Byakuya opens up to Rukia about his wife of long ago, Hisana, revealing that the resemblance which prompted the clan to adopt Rukia was no coincidence: Hisana was Rukia's own elder sister. He recounts how Hisana, unable to feed them both in the slums of Inuzuri, left the infant Rukia behind and then spent years searching in vain while blaming herself. In a deathbed memory, Hisana begs Byakuya to find and protect Rukia yet keep their kinship secret, feeling she had forfeited any right to be called sister. Byakuya took Rukia into the family a year later, breaking clan law a second time after his own marriage, and had sworn at his parents' graves never to bend the rules again, which left him torn between that oath and his promise to Hisana when Rukia faced execution. He thanks Ichigo and offers Rukia his apology. Later that night, a shaken Isane finds Unohana gazing at the stars over a small array of sake, and her captain assures her that the worst is finally past.

This chapter opens the twenty-first volume, titled BE MY FAMILY OR NOT, which carries Shinji Hirako on its cover. It pivots the story from combat into emotional fallout and delivers the reveal of Rukia's true parentage. Its scenes were spread across anime episodes sixty-two and sixty-three, with a portion later reused in the side-story episode two hundred eighty-seven.
