Summary

As Ichigo relives his mother's death, Isshin insists she was never meant to die that day. Masaki, an Echt Quincy before her merging with a Hollow, wielded Blut from birth without the training a Gemischt would need, and her unusually strong Blut Vene made White's wound so dangerous while shielding her from any Hollow injury in the years that followed. That is why, Isshin admits, he did not fail to save her so much as choose not to: he felt the spiritual pressure from the clinic and would have rushed to her had she truly been at risk. Grand Fisher hid his presence, yet the gulf between him and Masaki was so wide that she should have beaten him without a scratch. She did not.

Isshin asks whether Ichigo knows Uryū's mother, and when he admits he does not, names her as Kanae Katagiri, who fell ill nine years earlier on June 17th and died three months on. Nine years ago, he explains, Yhwach unleashed Auswählen to sift the surviving Quincy. He recounts the legend of the sealed king who reclaims his heartbeat after nine centuries, his mind after ninety years, and his strength after nine, achieved by stealing the powers of Quincy he judged impure. That theft plunged Katagiri into a fatal coma and stripped Masaki of her powers, and then her life. When Ichigo assumes Yhwach merely rules the Quincy, Isshin corrects him: Yhwach is their progenitor, the Father whose blood runs in every Quincy vein.

Recalling Yhwach's own words about bloodline and about The Jail's failure to hold a Quincy, Ichigo steadies himself and thanks his father. As the rain lifts and dawn nears, he steps outside, where Ikumi Unagiya returns the Substitute Shinigami Badge he left behind. Taking it with thanks, he tells Isshin he is leaving.

Far off in Silbern, Jugram Haschwalth approaches Yhwach's throne and steps aside to let Uryū walk forward, now clad in a Sternritter uniform. Yhwach welcomes him as his son and invites him to fight at their side.
