Two Arrancar crash into a bleak, dust-choked wasteland and, once the haze clears, find themselves standing side by side. Szayelaporro Granz is startled to have Aaroniero Arruruerie for company, and more startled that the ninth Espada's containment tank survived the fall intact. When Aaroniero suspects his companion wished the tank had shattered, Szayelaporro clarifies that a crack would merely have let him examine the fluid inside. Neither knows where they have landed, though Aaroniero counts the absence of Sousuke Aizen as fortune enough to kill the eighth Espada without consequence.

A stranger perched on a tall outcrop interrupts to name the place: Hell. He mocks their murderous bickering, points out that both Arrancar are already corpses, and warns that no way out exists. He calls himself Shuren and tells the pair that survival here depends on obedience to him. Three associates, Taikon, Gunjō, and Garogai, step out behind him, and Shuren orders them to teach the newcomers how the underworld is run.

Aaroniero enters his Resurrección and singles out Taikon, while Szayelaporro releases his Zanpakutō and gathers a Gran Rey Cero. His reasoning is coldly practical: if Aaroniero's Glotonería devours Shuren's trio, he need only finish Aaroniero to claim the bodies for study. Shuren, having reached the same verdict about his own allies, dismisses the two as unnecessary. The clash ends with both Espada beaten. Satisfied, Shuren tells his followers that creatures like these could never pry open Hell's gates. Raising a lantern, he glimpses Ichigo Kurosaki in his final Hollow form and resolves to drag that one down instead.

The installment is an omake tied to the film Bleach: The Hell Verse, functioning as a prologue that introduces Shuren and his band. Its events were adapted into Episode 299, Theatre Opening Commemoration! Hell Chapter・Prologue. Mayuri Kurotsuchi appears only in a passing flashback, recalled as the one who once defeated Szayelaporro.
