Shuren

Shuren wears the white bodysuit common to the Togabito, patterned with odd squares and wrapped in black cloth around his left leg, draped with a cloak and bound by red chains and shackles at the neck and chest. Rather than over his face, he bears the group's characteristic mask on his chest. His purple hair falls in a long fringe that veils the left half of his face.

Flamboyant and brimming with self-assurance, Shuren carries himself with open arrogance. He is cold and calculating enough to seize Ichigo's sisters as leverage, and he looks down on the Arrancar he encounters in Hell, dismissing them as useless and disposable. Even Szayelaporro Granz remarks on how conceited he is.

Shuren rules over other Togabito from a throne deep within Hell, driven by a single wish shared by all of the damned: to be freed from their prison. Believing that Ichigo Kurosaki's power is the key to breaking the gates, he sends his followers into the Human World to abduct Ichigo's sisters as hostages. He first crosses blades with the substitute Shinigami through a fiery duplicate of himself, one of the flame-born doubles he can conjure at will, and holds Yuzu captive to bend Ichigo to his demands.

In battle Shuren fights almost entirely through fire, molding it into high-speed projectiles, a lance he wields with skill, and barriers that can turn aside even a Getsuga Tenshō. His speed and resilience let him trade blows with Ichigo's Bankai on even terms, and he keeps his comrades in reserve by reviving them from a pool of lava after they fall, meaning to spend them more usefully. When Ichigo finally draws on his Hollow mask, the balance tips, and a point-blank black Getsuga reduces Shuren to dust. A half-formed attempt to regenerate rises from the lava afterward, only to be struck down by Kokutō, whose blade also reveals that Shuren's belief about the gates was mistaken all along.
