Overview

Sitting third within the Public Safety Saga and adapted across episodes 5 to 7 from chapters 14 to 22, the story takes over once the Bat Devil chapter wraps and points ahead to the coming Katana Man conflict. It tightens Denji's bonds with Himeno and Aki while pitting the squad against an enemy that feeds on their dread.

Summary

Reaching the Morin Hotel, Aki senses the quarry is not the Gun Devil, since the flesh sample they carry barely stirs. Himeno offers a kiss to whoever slays the devil, and Denji's enthusiasm jumps when she sweetens it to a tongue kiss. The team beats back a crawling severed head, then realizes they are caught: climb or descend as they might, they never leave the eighth floor. The devil they thought dead keeps ballooning, and the Eternity Devil announces it will let them go only if Denji is handed over as a meal. Because they are sealed off from the outside, Aki's Fox Devil will not answer, and Himeno's Ghost Devil merely makes the creature larger. When a frightened Kobeni and Arai move to surrender Denji, Aki throws himself in the way and takes a stab wound. Exasperated, Denji leaps down the devil's throat and bursts out as Chainsaw Man to rip it apart from within. Blood loss keeps withdrawing his chainsaws, so he chokes down the vile devil blood to bring them back, and Himeno's Ghost revives him whenever he flags. The grind stretches across three brutal days until the Eternity Devil, undone by pain, finally bares its weak spot and quits, and an almost let-down Denji finishes it before collapsing from exhaustion.

Aftermath

Himeno rallies the squad for a Division 4 party, where the rookies introduce themselves over rounds of drinks. She makes good on the kiss, but after one drink too many she throws up in Denji's mouth, spoiling it, then hauls him back to her place and offers herself to him; a lollipop from Makima reminds Denji of her and stops him. The next morning the two share breakfast and pledge to play matchmaker, steering Denji toward Makima and Himeno toward Aki. The story closes as the Gun Devil's henchmen ambush Makima aboard a Kyoto-bound train and shoot her in the head. Fresh faces here include Taiyo Hayakawa, the Fish Devil, the Eternity Devil, the Ghost Devil, and Madoka.
