Summary

Fami racks up a staggering order at the same restaurant where Yoshida once took Denji, and he begs her to ease off since he is paying. He also ribs her about her lazy choice of alias, but she shrugs that being recognized does not concern her.

Yoshida lays out the Prophecy of Nostradamus, which predicted humanity's end in July 1999. The public dismissed it, yet Public Safety did not, binding thirty convicts to the Future Devil in exchange for their freedom. Each gained foreknowledge of when they would die at some hidden cost, and twenty-three of the thirty were confirmed to perish that July. Yoshida adds that the agency suspects Fami's hand in the prophecy and threatens to label her a wild devil unless she helps. She counters that the surviving seven convicts will all die within the week, and that a Primal Fear surfaced moments ago at Tamano Apartments in the East District, naming her the first to plunge the world into dread.

In one such apartment, a couple toasting a promotion idly debate buying a car, judge it too costly, fall quiet, and then calmly agree to die before walking onto the balcony and leaping. Elsewhere, Yoru watches bodies rain down around her. She conjures a Ruler Sword and braces herself as a broken shape rises from the heap of corpses, but she drops her bag and flees, certain the fight is unwinnable.
