Appearance

In life Mai wore her hair short with bangs slanting across the right side of her brow, crowned by a ribbon. Her outfit layered a sweater above a collared, long-sleeved shirt, rounded out by a skirt together with knee-length black socks. Transformed into an Onbusuman, she swelled into a hulking thing with a bulbous, inhuman-faced head, a turtle's body, and a shaggy tail. Cleansing first restored a teenage version of her in those same clothes, and her spirit now takes a small form: a turtle head topped with a bow, an animal face beneath it, stubby limbs, and a little dress.

Personality

As a living child Mai was warm, sunny, and set on idol stardom, fiercely protective of that dream. Reborn as a guardian spirit, she turns blunt, stubborn, and often outright rude, hurling insults and refusing to honor Rin's wish to write novels, insisting an idol path is the only worthwhile one. For all that harshness, she leaps to Rin's defense the instant outsiders mock her, proof her devotion never faded.

History

Mai befriended Rin over a shared idol dream, drawing the shy girl out of her shell. A falling-out erupted when Rin, secretly burdened by school and a sick grandmother, questioned whether chasing idol fame was worth it; feeling betrayed, Mai branded her a traitor. Racing to reconcile on audition day, Mai and her mother died in a car crash, and her guilt-ridden spirit became an Onbusuman that haunted Rin for years. The Family cleanses her, the two reconcile, and she returns as a guardian spirit who channels her power into Rin's idol form during battles. At Veon Town, Red Baron rips the Onbusuman power away, and Mai crumbles and vanishes before a devastated Rin.
