Appearance

Muscular and young in the face, Red Baron has cropped blond hair and keen eyes he tends to hold shut. He dresses in a high-collared shirt with a neatly tucked cravat, layered under a lengthy orange coat of double-breasted cut whose collar and epaulettes carry sharp black trim. He likes to fold the coat sleeves back to his elbows, wears black gloves, and mixes dark and light footwear. Out among the public, he hides who he is beneath a dark hooded poncho.

Personality

Calm, serious, and calculating, Red Baron works to shave down the risk in any job, hiring shadowy agents to handle his dirty work and leaning on deception over a head-on clash. The moment a plan unravels he hunts for someone else to blame, as when Seiko exposed his scheme to coerce her, Momo, and Bamora and he at once pressed Reptilian to patch things up. He feels no loyalty, having ditched fellow Paladins Jack Wisp and Vakappa once Hanako overwhelmed them. Before superiors he plays the humble servant who accepts blame, yet still slides responsibility onto allies to excuse his own slips. As a fighter he keeps a warrior's discipline, bowing to foes before battle and praising those who can match him, while showing ruthless cruelty toward the helpless. Slights enrage him and failures wound his pride enough that he will defy orders to restore his dignity. His noble birth makes him scorn the notion of his class stooping to mingle with commoners, which is why he rejected Saint-Germain's plan to befriend Okarun's group.

History

Red Baron holds the smoke powers of an Enenra yokai. Through the Kozuka Knives Arc he coaches Koki from inside a locker, explaining she failed because she never made her target concede, sics agents on Seiko, recruits Hase to steal Okarun's power with Asura kozuka knives, and disqualifies Adachi before an intermediary strips her ability. In the Shimane Arc the Serpo hire him to take Momo and Seiko's powers, so he poses as an Izumo Taisha priest and lures them into a Matsue Castle replica, staging a ninja hostage trap. Once Seiko unmasks him he drops the disguise and overpowers her in close combat, his intangible smoke and his Setta sending her down. When Jiji and the Evil Eye arrive, a long brawl follows in which Jiji's Evil Gun, fueled by Spiral Power that makes D-form energy able to cut his L-form smoke, finally beats him and knocks him out into a pond.

Back in Kamigoe City he returns the borrowed kozuka knives to Saint-Germain, pins the loss on Reptilian, and is scolded yet credited for the data gathered. During the Six Curses Arc, he, Jack Wisp, and Vakappa drag Rin and Koki into Empty Space and rip away their Lord of the Flies and Onbusuman powers, only for Hanako to rout the trio and drive him to flee. At Vlad's lair he hands the stolen powers to Shinobi, draws the Count's scorn for taking them by force, and watches Vlad absorb four yokai abilities. When he objects to feeding Vlad another power, he is forced to kneel and apologize. Vlad then commands him to admit defeat, and Saint-Germain twists the knife by declaring that his new role is to act as 'Little Red Riding Hood' for the Fairy-Tale Card.
