Personality

A career swindler, Aiber earns his living by reading people and slipping seamlessly into whatever social circle a job demands. He speaks several languages and adopts false names at a moment's notice. According to Death Note 13: How to Read, the rush of deception is what drives him; he relishes living at the edge of danger and feels most alive while running a scam. His charm and striking looks let him win a stranger's trust and draw out secrets. His bond with L is partly one of obligation, since the detective holds evidence that could imprison him for life and has pulled him out of trouble more than once. Series artist Takeshi Obata regarded him as a sarcastic figure meant for comic relief, and later wished he had drawn him to be funnier and more distinctive.

History

When Shuichi Aizawa leaves the Kira inquiry and the National Police Agency withdraws its backing, L recruits Aiber and Wedy to reinforce the task force. His first task is to pose as the broker Eraldo Coil and worm his way into the Yotsuba Group. Phoning Masahiko Kida from France, he offers to expose L's identity for ten million, half of it in advance, and warns that his silence alone is worth the down payment. Yotsuba agrees. The next day he turns up at their offices under a second alias, marketing consultant John Wallace, to run a scripted interview with Misa Amane that shores up her cover.

He later joins the operation to catch Kyosuke Higuchi, lying in wait with Kanzo Mogi at Yoshida Productions. When the suspect bolts, the pair tail him to Sakura TV, where Higuchi shoots Soichiro Yagami and slips away; Aiber returns fire with Soichiro's pistol but misses. After L's death, Light Yagami records his true name, Thierry Morrello, in the notebook. The manga has him succumb to liver cancer in a Paris hospital with his wife and son at his bedside, while the anime implies a heart attack or alcohol poisoning at home before his family. It is also suggested that he and Wedy briefly served L years earlier, during the Los Angeles serial murder case.
