Summary

Convinced that Kyosuke Higuchi now wields Kira's power, L commits to a plan but knows he cannot move until the man's exact method of killing is understood. He presses Light and Misa on whether either recalls taking a life, and both flatly deny it. From there L lays out a fresh theory: Light once was Kira, the ability later slid to Higuchi, and Light retains no memory of the handoff. L weighs whether Light engineered the transfer himself or whether a hidden party arranged it, then settles on the former, since any shadow controller would have had no cause to stall a full week or to leave L breathing.

Wedy reports that Higuchi's estate is too heavily secured to bug, so L settles for planting devices across the man's fleet of cars. The detective's true gambit is a lengthy Kira special on Sakura TV, where a disguised Matsuda will pose as someone holding Higuchi's secret and promise to name Kira on air. Once the broadcast forces Higuchi to silence the threat, his technique should reveal itself.

Key Events

At a private gathering, the surviving Yotsuba executives reason their way to Higuchi as the killer among them, wanting only to escape the scheme alive. Light phones Namikawa, identifies himself through the L alias, and trades immunity for the group's cooperation, instructing Namikawa to alert Higuchi the instant the special airs and to block any interference. That evening the trap springs exactly as designed.

Watching from his sofa with a glass of wine, Higuchi sees the shrouded interviewee unmasked as the very man he believes he already condemned. Panicking, he burns through calls to Misa, Mido, Mogi, and a studio head, each failing to give him the real name he needs. Left no choice, he arms himself, pockets scraps of the notebook, and races off in his sports car with Wedy trailing, his despair curdling into wild laughter that unsettles even Rem.

Notes

Higuchi's private ambition surfaces here: he means to marry Misa, borrow her bargain for the eyes, and kill his way to the top of Yotsuba. A small production detail has the surveillance specialist's codename misspelled as Weddy on L's monitors.
