Appearance

Murata is an averagely tall, athletically built young man. His straight jet-black hair is parted down the center, fair skin, and plain black eyes with rectangular pupils. He wears the standard dark Corps uniform of a gakuran jacket and tattsuke-hakama, and during his earlier Final Selection days he is seen in a light-blue striped yukata.

Personality

Murata is a hapless, easily rattled slayer given to flashes of pessimism, quick to complain and quick to fret. Even so, he has clear moments of bravery, fighting on at Mount Natagumo as his squad was wiped out. He carries a fragile ego and bristles when lower-ranked members talk down to him, clashing with Inosuke and later Yushiro, yet he respects and fears the Hashira and openly admires their power.

He knows his own rank is low and recognizes the gulf between himself and Giyu, with whom he shared a Final Selection. Away from battle he is friendly and sociable, building genuine bonds during Hashira Training and growing close to Tanjiro.

Abilities

Murata is not an exceptional slayer, overshadowed by talents like Tanjiro, Inosuke, and Giyu, but he is far from incompetent. As the sole survivor of his squad on Mount Natagumo, he held back his manipulated comrades long enough for Tanjiro and Inosuke to win, a difficult feat given the puppets' enhanced strength. He also reached the demanding final stage of Gyomei's Hashira Training, which few managed.

His skill clearly improved afterward. He practices Water Breathing, although his version produces water so faint it cannot be seen, and in the Infinity Castle he displayed enhanced strength by beheading a demon many times his size and felling foes on the level of a Lower Rank.
