Appearance

Sumiyoshi closely resembles an aged, unscarred Tanjiro Kamado, sharing the same eyes, hair texture, and bone structure. His hair, however, falls to about shoulder length and is gathered into a ponytail at the back of his head.

His clothing mirrors that resemblance. He wears a white nagajuban under a short black-checkered kimono whose pattern almost matches Tanjiro's familiar haori, paired with light tobi trousers. On his feet he wears white zori with red straps and no tabi socks.

Personality

Through the brief memory passed to Tanjiro, Sumiyoshi comes across as warm and good-natured, a man who shares many traits with his far-off descendant. He is kind, generous, modest, and honest, treating his guest with steady gratitude rather than pity.

History

Sumiyoshi and his wife Suyako settle into an abandoned house in the forest. While Suyako is heavily pregnant, a demon attacks them, and the home's former resident, the swordsman Yoriichi Tsugikuni, intervenes to save them. Deeply thankful, Sumiyoshi forms a lasting bond with him.

When his second child is born, Sumiyoshi asks Yoriichi to watch over the family and later brings him food, insisting he stay despite the swordsman's reluctance to accept free meals. Over time Yoriichi opens up about his painful past, his lost wife Uta, his service in the Demon Slayer Corps, and his banishment after failing to slay Muzan Kibutsuji. Watching Yoriichi perform each Sun Breathing form for the family, Sumiyoshi commits the movements to memory and shapes them into the Hinokami Kagura. Before leaving for the last time, Yoriichi hands him his earrings, and Sumiyoshi vows to carry the dance and the earrings forward through future generations (Chapter 192).
