Rei Six

Six inhabits the smallest body of the entire Ayanami line, equivalent to that of a seven-year-old. Her size creates practical problems in the cockpit; whenever she flies any Evangelion other than her own, the entry plug has to be refitted so her hands can even reach the controls. A detail of Type-N Robots usually shadows her as escorts and minders.

Never designed to think for herself, Six develops a personality anyway after Rei Quatre's mind contamination spreads through the clone line, and hers emerges unstable. The people around her compensate with affection. She bonds closely with Mari, whose physical and mental age roughly match her own, forms sibling-like attachments to Toji and to Rei Cinq, and befriends Hikari. Cinq's steadying presence in particular becomes essential ballast for Six's volatile mind, and Misato teases her with the nickname Chiba-nami on account of her tiny frame.

Six comes from the batch of Ayanami clones cultivated in artificial wombs after SEELE's raid on the NERV base. Observing that the soulless bodies unconsciously synchronized their movements and brain activity with the ensouled original, NERV built a mental mirroring system through which Rei Trois pilots the sisters remotely, Six among them. Unlike the others, she was purpose-grown for combat in zero gravity. Even as her contamination-born instability worries the personnel around her, NERV backs her fully, and she serves first in Unit-0.0 [Six] before transferring to Evangelion Unit-00 Type F.
