Dummy Plug Plant

The Dummy Plug Plant, formally designated Deep Underground Facility: Central Area, lies far beneath NERV Headquarters inside Central Dogma. Its purpose is storage: rows of empty Rei Ayanami bodies float here, clones without souls that reportedly function as the cores of the Dummy System. The chamber also exists in the Rebuild of Evangelion continuity, where Gendo is seen there with Rei.

The room's contents hint at its engineering lineage. A brain sealed inside a metallic casing, a spinal column, and a great tank of LCL sit together in an arrangement that suggests a primitive forerunner of the entry plug system used by the Evangelions, and the preserved brain may share its origins with the organic component at the heart of the MAGI. The facility does not survive the series intact: in Episode 23, Ritsuko Akagi triggers a process called Destrudo Release, and the stored clones disintegrate before her eyes.

No staff are assigned to the plant; it is defined by the soulless Rei vessels it houses. Ritsuko Akagi is the one who ultimately destroys them, while Gendo Ikari and Rei herself appear inside the chamber in both the original series and the Rebuild films.
