Evangelion Mark.07

Evangelion Mark.07 belongs to the Mark Series of mass-built Evangelions NERV deploys during Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon A Time. Nothing about its silhouette matches a conventional Eva: the frame is thin and divided into stacked cross-sections, and the head is left uncovered above the jaw so that a humanoid skull shows through. A NERV emblem sits on the forehead and inside each eye socket, while a SEELE marking is worked into the dorsal plating.

Bolts stud the neck and other parts of the body, usually clustered around red markings along the spine. Midway up its stretched neck sits a supported halo, the flight mechanism common to NERV's Mark units. The design omits both an entry plug hatch and an umbilical socket, and the unit apparently generates no A.T. Field, leaving it open to ordinary weaponry. Each one that dies leaves behind the halo and cross of light typical of a destroyed Evangelion.

Armament is essentially absent. Across its entire screen time, no Mark.07 ever draws a weapon or displays any special ability beyond flight; the swarm fights by slamming into obstacles at velocity and massing into enormous blockades. Whether the shoulder pylons hold anything, or exist purely as symbols the way Evangelion Mark.06's do, is never clarified. Tubes jut from the wrists, and Ikuto Yamashita's concept art shows them spraying a red fluid, a behavior cut from the finished film along with a scrapped idea that the units would swell and burst to spread coreification.

The swarm debuts after the strike on the old NERV headquarters exposes the still-dormant Evangelion 13. Mark.07s pour out of openings on every face of the pyramid in numbers Midori Kitakami calls impossible to count, then hurl themselves at the two descent ships carrying New Unit-02α and Unit-08γ until the vessels detonate, stripping the WILLE Evas of their protective escort. New Unit-02α cuts down waves of them using weaponry stored in Unit-08γ's tailgate, and one attacker that tries to bite the red Eva loses half its head to a circular saw. The remaining mass then fuses into a colossal drill that keeps advancing through missile fire; only when the two WILLE units synchronize their A.T. Fields into a drill of their own do they punch through the horde and reach the buried headquarters. The type is wiped out for good when Gendo wields the Spear of Gaius to erase every Evangelion from existence.

Every Mark.07 flies autonomously, with no visible pilot. Asuka Shikinami Langley and Mari Makinami Illustrious dismiss them as "Mock EVAs," a label hinting that their control scheme differs from the Adams vessels, Mark.09-A, Mark.10, Mark.11 and Mark.12, which carry Advanced Ayanami Series clones. NERV manufactures the type at industrial scale, and its skeletal look, complete with a full human count of 16 teeth in each dental arch, has been read as a nod to the resurrection of the dead described in the Book of Revelation.
