History

Sugaya once hoped to shine at both his studies and his art, which led him to enroll in an escalator school. Kunugigaoka exposed the ceiling on his academic ability, and as his marks slipped his artistic side only grew more pronounced. By his second year the contrast stood out so sharply that teachers wrote him off as a delinquent fixated on drawing, and the combination of weak grades and single-minded art landed him in Class 3-E. The move ended up steadying him: with the pressure eased he clawed back his confidence and found a workable balance between coursework and his creative ambitions.

He makes his entrance dazzling the class with a henna tattoo on his arm and offers to ink one onto Korosensei, who happily agrees. Part of the teacher's face starts to melt, and Sugaya reveals he ground anti-sensei material into the paint before sheepishly promising to redo it with ordinary henna. The whole class soon copies his henna craze. His artistry carries tactical weight too, and during the clash with the gunman Gastro he builds a lifelike humanoid decoy that fools the assassin long enough for Chiba to take him down.

As the most artistically gifted member of Class E, Sugaya turns his eye for form into disguises, camouflage for the class's assassination gear, quietly crafted tools, and finely sculpted small objects. His talent links him to like-minded classmates, from touring exhibitions with the filmmaker Koki Mimura to swapping art magazines for Yuzuki Fuwa's manga issues, though his habit of sketching people, including Rinka Hayami and Ryunosuke Chiba, sometimes lands him in awkward moments.
