Tōru Ōkawa

Okawa provided the original Japanese voice of Colonel Roy Mustang in the 2003 Fullmetal Alchemist anime, the ambitious Flame Alchemist who commands a loyal circle of subordinates while pursuing the office of Fuhrer. He did not reprise the part for the 2009 continuation, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, where Shinichiro Miki took over as Mustang; Okawa's performance remains tied specifically to the earlier series. Mustang stands among his most recognized anime credits from that decade, playing to Okawa's strength for commanding, authoritative male characters. The role came during a period when Okawa was transitioning fully into voice work after years as a stage performer.

Okawa trained at Nihon University's College of Art and spent roughly a decade as a stage actor before joining the Mausu Promotion agency in the mid-1990s, where his focus shifted to voice work. He went on to narrate JoJo's Bizarre Adventure for a decade, voice Spirit Albarn in Soul Eater and Sengoku in One Piece, and lend his deep tone to video game characters including Gouken in the Street Fighter series. That combination of narration, anime, and game work has made him one of the more consistently working character actors in the Japanese voice industry since the 1980s.
