Appearance

Bandages bound his forearms, and a hooded green haori, torn and weathered, hung over trousers of the same cloth. A pair of small round goggles rested at his brow. He was built tall and heavily muscled with tanned skin, his narrow grey eyes set above a broad nose, thick lips, and deep hollows beneath the eyes.

Personality

By nature he was quiet and calculating, a patient commander who read a situation before committing and could hold his platoon together even when his superior Seiren was absent. That composure fell away in combat, where he turned passionate and cruel, taunting foes and hoping to draw out their suffering. He prized his life at sea, held that the strong were meant to rule the weak, and blamed Kirigakure for stripping the Land of Water of its pride.

His devotion to the Funato bordered on worship, above all toward Seiren, and it drove him to reckless extremes, from sacrificing his own soldiers to ignoring direct orders in pursuit of victory and revenge. Yet the pirate was not without tenderness. As a husband and father he took those roles to heart, and that softened him toward children and non-combatants, sparing enemies who showed the same mercy so long as they left his superiors unharmed. A can of beer left at his grave hinted at a fondness he carried in life.

History

Funamushi raised his son Kobuna as a true Funato, teaching the boy to loathe Kirigakure and commit himself to the clan. Ranked among its strongest fighters and serving as Seiren's aide, he wielded a summoned swarm of leeches that sent their victims berserk, and he could draw on Water Release without an outside source for most of his techniques. He conjured towering water vortexes, cloaked himself in a giant jellyfish of water, folded the element into his swordplay, and, using a method Araumi taught him, drained the blood of others to fuel his largest attacks. His agility, raw strength, and durability let him trade blows evenly with Kagura Karatachi and shrug off a direct Rasengan.

In the Great Sea Battle of Kirigakure, he stood at Seiren's side as she cut down former allies who had submitted to the Hidden Mist, then used his leeches to seize control of an island's people and struck at Kagura. After Seiren fell to Kagura and Boruto, he walled them off with water, recovered her, and later led an elite force through the mountains in a scheme to draw Kirigakure's defenders out to sea. When his men found the enemy's traps, he turned the plan back on them through a hidden game trail, seized a weakened Kagura as a hostage, and ran him through the chest to avenge Seiren.

Boruto's fury awakened his Karma, letting him break past Funamushi's defenses and drop him with a Rasengan, though the commander refused to fall back and defied Araumi's order to withdraw. He held near the village, took Iwabee Yuino and Denki Kaminarimon prisoner rather than kill them once he learned they had been gathering food for the village children, and pressed the fight the next morning. Rain let him raise a giant water jellyfish that struck friend and foe alike; Hebiichigo pinned him with Nuibari's wire long enough for Boruto to close in, and after a final exchange Buntan drove Kiba through him, avenging Kagura. His men bore his body away as they retreated. His death sent Kobuna hunting Boruto for revenge and left Ikada seething over the loss of yet another sibling in all but name.
