Kobuna is a young Funato clan pirate, a spirited and family-loving boy who once dreamed of toppling Kirigakure. His father Funamushi's death turns him single-mindedly toward vengeance, until Boruto's remorse and self-sacrifice for peace finally soften his heart.
Yellow-eyed and faint of brow, Kobuna is still a child. His hair is brown and cut short, though a denser tuft of straw-colored strands sprouts at its middle, and wrappings cover both forearms. A red tank top with shorts and sandals makes up his outfit. Across his face runs a purple Funato tattoo patterned after his father's, and a little pouch hangs at his throat.
Sure of himself and fiercely devoted to family, Kobuna began as a bright, upbeat child, loyal to the Funato cause and set on bringing Kirigakure down while gladly lending his clansmen a hand. That warmth hardened the instant his father was killed, his whole self bent toward payback. What ultimately turned him around was watching Boruto grieve honestly over Funamushi's death and offer his own life in the name of peace.
For all his youth and thin experience, Kobuna handles a knife well enough to keep pace with Boruto Uzumaki briefly, and at range he fires senbon through a blowpipe with sharp accuracy. He swims strongly too, boasting he can stay under water past three minutes, though he leans heavily on Gokai for guidance. During the sea war against Kirigakure he ran small errands, delivering shells to Seiren and coaxing Ikada outdoors to watch his blowpipe drills at his mother's request. The mood shattered when Funamushi's corpse was brought back; he and his mother wept, and he pushed away Ikada's comfort, pressing to learn the identity of the killer so his father could be avenged. He begged Gokai to ink him as his father had been and set out by boat for revenge. He and Gokai then jumped Boruto, but Boruto downed Gokai easily and froze once he realized the boy was Funamushi's son, giving Sarada the moment to shield him. Later, during the raid on the Shinonome 1, Boruto laid down his own life so the fighting might end, letting Ikada grant Kobuna the final strike. When the boy faltered rather than shove him overboard, Boruto leapt on his own. In the war's wake, Kobuna went to his father's grave and resolved to grow strong in his image, gladly accepting Gokai's offer to raise him.
