Appearance

The three gill-like marks trailing down each side of Seiren's neck are her most telling feature. She is a tan-skinned young woman of average height and a slim, shapely build, her short, spiky orange hair falling into chin-length bangs around her face and her eyes a silver shade. She dresses in a white tanktop cropped above the navel with a small brown vest, grey wrappings along her arms, a necklace strung with three beads, and brown trousers torn at the left leg over a long black legging. To move unseen she swaps all of this for a long orange wig, a grey robe, dark gloves, and a white shawl drawn up over her neck and mouth.

Personality

Loyalty to the Funato and to her father defined Seiren completely. She could stomach no betrayal, and after Kirigakure seized her father she wiped out an entire island for siding with them, sparing neither the old nor the defenceless. She would drive herself well past her limits in the clan's service, even while gravely hurt, all toward her deepest wish, to see the Funato rule supreme over every sea. For all that, she kept a gentler side for her younger brother Ikada, trusting him to find his own way, though that trust always circled back to the clan, since she longed for him to embrace his pride as a Funato. Proud of her life on the water, she dismissed those raised in cities as spoiled, and in a fight she took pleasure in taunting her enemies.

History

When Seiren was a girl, her father Araumi came home from a raid with a boy named Tenma whom he chose to adopt. She watched uneasily as her younger brother Ikada was forced through a coming-of-age rite meant to reveal his inherited power, hurled into a storm-lashed sea, only for his Funato gift to surface in a towering wave that spared him from drowning and left his siblings speechless. Years on, after Kirigakure captured their father, Ikada left to chase his love of boats, and Seiren alone stood behind him, keeping in touch in the quiet hope that he would come to see how corrupt the Land of Water was and return of his own accord.

A high-ranking Funato and a powerful shinobi, Seiren was said never to have lost a mark, and she could melt into a crowd as easily as any passerby. She could conjure a black fog to hide herself and her ship, held her own with a blade, and excelled above all at archery, loosing chakra arrows from a ray-shaped bow to snipe her targets. Beyond the wound, the arrows scrambled an enemy's chakra flow to leave them paralyzed, and by plucking the bowstring she could bend an arrow's path in midair to slip past a guard or pinpoint people through echolocation. During the Funato's war on Kirigakure, she joined her family's feast after Isari freed their father, only for Tenma to arrive with word that his ship fortress and its main cannon had been destroyed by a joint Kiri and Konoha effort. Sent ahead to an island crawling with clan traitors, and keen to see Ikada, she cut the traitors down and met her brother in secret, pressing him to rejoin the clan. Ikada refused, set on staying with his shipbuilding teacher Kajiki. On her way out she passed Boruto Uzumaki, and his Konoha headband marked him as one of those who had wrecked Tenma's ship.

Ordering her men to kill all but one on the island so that word of Funato might would spread, Seiren hunted Boruto down as he shielded himself with shadow clones against her fog. She would not say why she wanted him dead and fired, paralyzing his arm, until Kagura arrived to block a shot and revealed to Boruto that she was tracking him by sound. Using the thunderstorm to throw off her echolocation, Boruto teamed with Kagura to slip behind her and strike her down. Funamushi carried the wounded, unconscious Seiren back to their ship, where Ikada kept vigil over her despite their differences, but her injuries refused to mend. When she woke, she furiously tried to return to the fight and collapsed, tearing her wounds open again. To calm her, Ikada lied that the Funato had beaten Kirigakure, and she wept with joy believing the clan had triumphed before dying soon after. Her death pushed Ikada to abandon his dream of shipbuilding and awaken his true Funato power, bent on avenging her by destroying Kirigakure and killing Boruto. In a bitter twist, her wish for him to reject the Land of Water's corruption and return to the clan came true only because she was gone, and when Ikada at last embraced his destiny, Araumi grieved that neither Seiren nor Tenma had lived to see it.
