Might Duy

Duy is a tall, sturdily built man with high cheekbones, a somewhat bulbous nose, and dark hair cut into a bowl shape combed to his right and lifting slightly at the ends. A bristling moustache tops a small goatee, with stubble filling out the rest of his beard, and coarse body hair covers his wrists and forearms. Thick eyebrows sit above his eyes, and his outfit is a green jumpsuit paired with orange-striped leg warmers and a yellow scarf.

Proud and irrepressibly upbeat, Duy shares his son's over-the-top energy, forever flashing a "nice guy" pose and thanking even those who mock his low rank. He held that self-belief is the root of any achievement, and that a person's real youth ends only when they abandon their convictions and their joy. His bond with Guy ran deep; he never stopped pushing the boy toward his best and lifting him whenever his spirits sank, a relationship later mirrored between Guy and Rock Lee. Fearless before any enemy and ready to lay down his life for his son, Duy passed on the belief that the purest measure of strength is not toppling a mighty foe but shielding those one loves.

Duy remained a genin for his entire career, a fact that drew scorn and saddled him with the title of Eternal Genin, though the anime reveals his poor showing on simple missions stemmed from secret nightly training that left his body drained. That labour paid off, for after twenty tireless years he mastered every one of the Eight Gates, a feat that, per his Naruto Mobile profile, could make his strength rival an elite jōnin's. When his son Guy stumbled early on, failing his first bid to enter the Academy and sinking into self-pity, Duy scolded him for losing faith and set about teaching him the same forbidden technique. He and Guy once crossed paths with Sakumo Hatake and young Kakashi outside the Academy, where Sakumo assumed the boys would be classmates only to hear that Guy had flunked the exam. Later, Duy arrived to rescue Guy and his teammates Ebisu and Genma Shiranui from the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist. Reminding his son that the Eight Gates existed for exactly this, the protection of someone precious, he opened all of them and, in the anime, cut down four of the swordsmen before the strain claimed his life. His sacrifice shaped Guy forever, and the belief he handed down carried on through Rock Lee and, in time, to Metal Lee.
