Papa's Youth

As a boy, Guy asks his father Might Duy how he stays cheerful despite the villagers who ridicule him. Duy answers that real strength has nothing to do with beating opponents; it lies in guarding what one holds dear. Guy trains hard, often crossing paths with Kakashi, whose talent makes him want to issue a challenge. Duy pushes back on the idea and proposes his son set himself a personal rule instead, so Guy pours his effort into growing strong precisely so he will not need to challenge his rival. Through sheer persistence he graduates from the Academy and begins taking missions.

Guy notices his father is only ever handed shabby, low-ranking jobs, and before one mission he overhears a jonin voicing displeasure with Duy's showing. He comes to understand that his father underperforms by day because every night he secretly trains in the Eight Gates, a forbidden technique Duy has mastered and now teaches his son. On a mission, Guy's team runs into the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist, and as fear grips the boy, Duy appears and shields him by opening the Eight Gates. The scene returns to the present, where Guy at last unlocks the eighth gate. Wreathed in red vapour, he surges toward Madara to deliver the Evening Elephant.

Episode 419 of Naruto: Shippuden belongs to the Birth of the Ten-Tails' Jinchuriki arc and adapts chapter 668. It aired in Japan on 9 July 2015 and in English on 9 January 2018. The opening theme is Wind and the ending theme is Rainbow's Sky.
