Tarui's most notable trait is her extremely long blonde hair, which falls all the way to her ankles, with two lengthy bangs bracketing her face. Her skin reads dark in the anime and lighter in the manga, and her eyes are yellow. She wears standard Kumogakure gear, a white flak jacket over a dark undershirt and pants, though her sleeves deliberately mismatch: the left one runs long to cover her arm and mask her movements from opponents. A black lapel wraps her waist, bandages cover her right arm and ankles, and her forehead protector is styled like a knit cap.

Her looks and piercing stare set her apart, lending her an air that unsettles those around her, and she meets situations with a calm, clear head.

In the anime Tarui favours close-quarters combat, reaching for a lariat when she fights. She and her teammates Yurui and Toroi, forming Team Yurui, travel to Konohagakure for the Chūnin Exams. After the opening ceremony they cross paths with Team Konohamaru, then race the other entrants toward the first stage while slipping past every trap to reach Exam Venue B. A true-or-false question there drops most competitors into a pool of ink, but the three dodge it and clear the round. Three days on, the second stage pits her squad against Team 15 in capture the flag; they seize the enemy banner and reach the finals. In the individual bouts she is drawn against Sarada Uchiha, who, mere seconds in, hurls her into the arena wall with chakra-enhanced strength and knocks her out of the contest.
