Jiraiya and Kakashi

As a boy, Jiraiya drags Orochimaru along to peek at bathing women, but the uninterested Orochimaru walks off, leaving Jiraiya to be caught and drenched with hot water by an old woman. Years later as teens, Jiraiya schemes to woo Tsunade by having Orochimaru fake an attack so he can play the rescuer, a plan that flops. During the Second Shinobi World War, the three sit by a fire trading dreams: Tsunade longs to roam and gamble the world over, Jiraiya wants to travel at her side to her irritation, and Orochimaru, claiming none at first, admits he simply wishes to master ninjutsu and grow stronger.

Kirigakure shinobi ambush the trio, who fight back. The second vignette follows a young Kakashi cooking fish and keeping house. At the Academy he spars with Hiruzen as Rin and Obito look on, and afterward he brushes off his skill as the product of a few books. Curious, Obito trails him and finds him practising his fishing, then Kakashi calls both friends over to share the meal he has prepared, downplaying himself once more.

The next day Obito thanks Kakashi for the food when they cross paths, and at the Academy Guy challenges Kakashi and comes away impressed. Kakashi visits his father's grave to speak of his new friends, and when Guy challenges him again he holds out longer while Obito and Rin cheer. Trivia flags that Hiruzen's hair is wrongly shown white during this childhood period and that Rin's face markings appear blue rather than purple throughout.
