Appearance

As a boy, Obito has dark eyes, and his black hair is worn short and spiky. He dresses in a blue uniform and goggle-topped ear protectors with orange lenses. The cave-in at Kusagakure leaves the entire right side of his face and torso ruined, and those parts are rebuilt from pale White Zetsu material grafted onto him. Over the years he cycles his hair long and short and hides behind a series of masks: an early black-flame design, then the orange, single-eyed spiral he wears as Tobi, and finally a durable purple-tinted mask patterned after the Sharingan and Rinnegan. His wardrobe shifts with each guise, from a bandaged Mizukage disguise to Madara-style Uchiha robes and, in the war, a high-collared purple mantle bearing the clan crest, with Madara's gunbai slung on his back. Once he becomes the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki his hair and skin turn white, ten spines jut from his back, and horns sprout from his brow.

Personality

Raised without parents and starved for recognition, the young Obito chases the title of Hokage in the hope the village will finally see him, and he falls for his teammate Rin while nursing a one-sided rivalry with the effortlessly gifted Kakashi. Warm-hearted and famously late because he stops to help others, especially the elderly, his openness and optimism are exactly the qualities Madara exploits. Rin's death shatters that idealism completely. Obito grows cold and single-minded, dismissing his friends, his village, even his own name as worthless pieces of a cruel world, and pours himself into the Eye of the Moon Plan, rationalizing every killing as a sacrifice for the perfect reality to come. He treats even his allies, Madara included, as disposable tools the moment they stop being useful.

Beneath the ruthlessness, he remains the same boy at heart. He fixates on Sasuke as the person he wishes he were and on Naruto as the person he used to be, and it is Naruto's unbreakable will that finally exposes the truth: Obito has been lying to himself, wearing the detached mastermind as a mask to hide from his own regret and failure. Once defeated, his original self resurfaces, and he spends his last efforts opposing the very plan he built, laying down his life to shield Naruto and even returning briefly from death to make peace with Kakashi. To keep his identity buried, he long plays the buffoonish, happy-go-lucky Tobi, an act that irritates most of Akatsuki while masking the man beneath.

History

Obito grows up not knowing his parents, dreaming of becoming Hokage, and is placed on Minato Namikaze's team beside Rin and Kakashi. In the Third Shinobi World War, on a mission to bring down the Kannabi Bridge, Rin is seized by Iwa ninja. When Kakashi chooses the mission over her rescue, Obito storms off to save her alone, and the effort awakens his Sharingan. He frees Rin but is crushed under a collapsing cave, and, believing himself finished, has his left eye transplanted into Kakashi as a parting gift before the others flee. Konoha carves his name into the village's Memorial Stone.

In truth, an aged Madara pulls him from the rubble and rebuilds his ruined body with Hashirama Senju's cells. Obito means to return home until he witnesses Kakashi driving a Chidori through Rin's heart, a death that matures his eye into the Mangekyō Sharingan and unleashes a slaughter of the Kiri-nin responsible. Broken, he adopts the Eye of the Moon Plan as his own, inherits Madara's knowledge and Rinnegan-linked schemes, and takes up the name Madara Uchiha. Moving in secret, he steers the young Akatsuki toward collecting the tailed beasts, bends the Fourth Mizukage to his will, and, on the night of Naruto's birth, tears the Nine-Tails from Kushina Uzumaki and looses it on Konoha before Minato drives him off. Later he goads Itachi and helps set the stage for the Uchiha massacre.

Years on, Obito abandons his masks and openly launches the Fourth Shinobi World War, wielding Kamui, revived shinobi, and finally the reincarnated Ten-Tails, which he seals into himself to become its jinchūriki and eclipse even Hashirama in power. Yet as Naruto refuses to break, Obito's resolve collapses into doubt. Turning against Madara and the plan, he throws his remaining strength into shielding Naruto and his allies, sacrificing his life to save the world he once meant to remake, and briefly clawing back from death to secure their victory and reconcile with Kakashi.
