Sora sends Naruto tumbling down the temple stairs and calls it divine punishment, and though the prank stings, Naruto's annoyance fades once he notices the cold looks the other monks throw at Sora, a hostility that feels oddly familiar. Inside the Fire Temple, the monk Chiriku explains that the desecrated graves held members of the Twelve Guardian Ninja, warriors once pledged to shield the daimyo of the Land of Fire. When Naruto puzzles over why such guardians were needed alongside Konoha's own ninja, Yamato clarifies that the village defends the whole nation while the Guardians answered only to the feudal lord, and adds that Asuma once counted among the twelve.

Chiriku goes deeper into the group's history, recounting how six of the twelve schemed to expand the Fire Daimyo's rule over neighboring lands, prompting the daimyo to order the remaining six to cut them down. The clash left only Chiriku and Asuma standing. Sai grasps that the robbed tombs belonged to their old friends and likens the wound to what Naruto and Sakura would feel over Sasuke, and Naruto swears to catch those behind the thefts. A sparring match then pits Naruto against Sora, whose forceful blows lose their aim the moment he catches the monks staring, letting Naruto slip past and land a kick before Chiriku halts them. Later Naruto finds Sora training with his Beast Tearing Gale Palm and presses him about his Wind Release. Sora confesses that everyone dislikes him, yet no one more than himself, blaming a hidden power he cannot shed but needs to avenge his murdered father. A patrol bird cuts the moment short, and word arrives that another tomb has been breached, sending Team Yamato and Sora rushing off just as the grave robbers reach the temple they left behind.

Loneliness is the fifty-eighth Shippuden episode, set within the anime-exclusive Twelve Guardian Ninja arc and not adapted from the manga. It aired in Japan on May 8, 2008 and in English on December 8, 2010, opening with Blue Bird and closing with Gentle Rainbow. A minor continuity quirk: the head monk debuts here with black eyebrows but appears with white ones in a later episode.
