The Last Mission

Shino has his insects report on which gifts their friends have already bought for Naruto and Hinata's wedding, then shows the kikaichū to Academy students, one of whom dreams of becoming Hokage like Naruto. Watching nearby, Iruka listens as Shino urges them to chase their ambitions. Kiba grumbles that he is late, but Shino points out everyone else has settled on a present. Treating this as Team 8's last shared mission, the pair ask Kurenai for guidance, and she recalls a rare honey wine the Senju clan once gave on special occasions.

The two head to Sora-ku, home of a beekeeper said to brew it. There a ninneko named Momo refuses to help and needles them over their dog and insect scents, until Tamaki appears, apologizes for his manner, and points them toward the beekeeper. Kiba flirts with her before they press on. Lost in thought, Shino loses track of Kiba and is ambushed by the beekeeper, whom he outwits. Believing Shino means to kill him, the man instead simply hands over the wine when asked. He then warns of a barrier of doubt-inducing fog that keeps visitors wandering in circles.

Kiba escapes the area easily, but the fog snares Shino, feeding on his uncertainty about who he will be once Team 8 ends. Recalling his talks with the Academy students, Kiba, and Kurenai, Shino resolves to find a new path and walks free. Reunited, the two leave with the honey wine, and Shino speaks again with the students, further inspiring them. Iruka suggests he would make a fine teacher.

Kiba and Kurenai help Shino settle on rare Senju honey wine as a wedding gift. In Sora-ku the pair meet Momo and Tamaki, and Shino tricks the wary beekeeper into handing over the wine. Shino overcomes the fog's doubt about his future beyond Team 8 by resolving to forge a new path, and Iruka floats the idea of Shino becoming an Academy instructor.

Episode four-hundred-ninety-eight of Naruto: Shippūden is part of the Konoha Hiden: The Perfect Day for a Wedding arc. It first aired in Japan on March 9, 2017, and in English on June 11, 2019. The opening theme is Empty Heart and the ending is Absolutely. The episode foreshadows Shino's later role as a teacher in the Academy.
