Summary

Three quarters of an hour into the written test, Ibiki Morino declares the tenth question is coming and warns of a single unusual rule attached to it. Away in the Academy staff room, Kakashi, Asuma, and Kurenai weigh their students' odds, with the two men noting Ibiki's talent for interrogation and reading people. Back in the hall, Ibiki lays out the trap: skip the question and the whole team is out, but answer it wrong and the candidate is banned from the Chūnin Exams for life. A number of teams fold and walk away rather than gamble everything.

Key Events

With no answers to the first nine and little hope for the tenth, Naruto wavers, then loudly swears he will not be scared off and will become Hokage even if he stays a genin forever. His outburst steadies the remaining candidates, and Ibiki passes everyone who stayed, explaining the earlier questions gauged information-gathering while the last one measured nerve. Anko Mitarashi bursts through the window to announce herself as the next examiner, and afterward Ibiki grins over Naruto's blank sheet, amused to have passed a boy who wrote nothing at all.
