Where Tenten Belongs

Inside the dream, Kushina fixes breakfast for a son who storms off without touching it, leaving her frustrated. Tenten, uneasy about the fabricated teammates around her, seeks out Kurenai hoping to study genjutsu, but this version of Kurenai admires the art without being able to wield it, and their attempts to explain how such illusions are broken lead nowhere. Over a meal, a merchant who watched her fight the day before approaches and points her toward a shinobi in Amegakure said to be capable of dispelling even the most powerful genjutsu, pressing a map to the village into her hands.

Although Konoha and Amegakure are not allied, Tenten sets out anyway and is intercepted by Konoha ninja acting on intelligence of a coming Ame attack and a tip that she meant to defect. The map turns out to hide a secret message to Amegakure, and as her teammates and neighbors watch her hauled away, she realizes the merchant orchestrated the whole frame. From her cell she is heartened when Lee and Neji appear at the window to declare their faith in her, and she warns them about the disguised schemer. An explosion erupts and Ame shinobi pour into the burning village through a summoning formula. Menma arrives with the false merchant in custody, having grown suspicious of Tenten's odd behavior after reading his father's records, and he frees her, admitting he senses she is not the Tenten he knew and does not truly belong there. When Hanzo attacks astride his salamanders, Menma meets him in full Tailed Beast Mode while Tenten takes the second beast using the Treasured Tools of the Sage of Six Paths. With the raid repelled, her comrades praise her, and Tenten, proud of her strength, feels at last that she fits into the dream.

The episode is part of the Birth of the Ten-Tails' Jinchuriki arc and unfolds entirely within the illusion woven over the shinobi world. Familiar faces appear in altered roles, including a genjutsu-obsessed Kurenai unable to cast it and a heroic Menma leading the village's defense.
